5 Physiotherapists Near Edgecliff: A Local Guide (Within 3km of Our Studio)

Whether you’re nursing a sore knee, coming back from an injury or simply want a professional to check out a niggle before you start training, knowing a good local physiotherapist helps. Our studio is at 114-118 New South Head Road, Edgecliff, and the Eastern Suburbs is well served by physio clinics.

Below are five physiotherapy clinics within roughly 3km of our studio, with a short note on each. We’ve also explained when it makes sense to see a physio first, and how physiotherapy fits alongside strength training and exercise physiology.

This list is general information to help locals find care. It isn’t a ranking, review or endorsement, and Movement District isn’t affiliated with these clinics. Check each clinic’s website for current services, hours and fees.

Physio, Exercise Physiologist or Personal Trainer: Who Do You Need First?

The three roles overlap, but they are not the same:

  • A physiotherapist assesses and treats injuries and pain, often with hands-on treatment, and gives you a diagnosis and a recovery plan.
  • An exercise physiologist uses exercise to manage injuries, chronic conditions and long-term recovery.
  • A personal trainer or small group coach helps you build strength, fitness and consistency once you are cleared to train.

If you have sharp pain, a recent injury or something that has been bothering you for weeks, a physio is usually the best first stop. We cover the differences in more detail in our guide to exercise physiologists vs personal trainers.

How to Choose the Right Physio for You

All of these clinics will have physiotherapists registered with AHPRA, but it still pays to ask a few questions before you book:

  • Do you treat my type of problem? A sports injury, back pain and a post-surgery recovery are different.
  • Will I get a plan I can follow at home? Good physiotherapy includes exercises, not just treatment on the table.
  • How do fees and rebates work? Many private health funds cover physiotherapy under extras cover, but check your level of cover.
  • Can you work with my trainer? Clear communication helps you return to training safely.
  • Is location and timing convenient? You are more likely to stick with a plan if the clinic fits your routine.

Getting the Most From Physio and Training Together

Physiotherapy and strength training work best as a team. Many people see a physio to diagnose and settle an injury, then move into structured training to build the strength that helps stop it coming back.

If you’ve been cleared to exercise, small group training can be a good next step. At Movement District we cap classes at six people so your coach can adjust exercises around any limitations, and you aren’t left on your own in a busy gym. If you want to ease back into exercise, our beginner guide to personal training in Edgecliff explains what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?

No. In Australia you can book a physiotherapist directly. A GP referral may help if you’re claiming through certain schemes, such as a Chronic Disease Management plan, workers compensation or DVA, so check with your GP and the clinic.

Should I see a physio before starting a training program?

If you have pain, a recent injury, or have been told to be careful with exercise, yes. A physio can tell you what is safe and what to avoid. If you’re generally healthy, you can usually start training and mention any concerns to your coach.

Can I train while I’m seeing a physio?

Often yes, with modifications. Tell your coach what your physio has advised, and follow their guidance on which movements to avoid or adjust.

What’s the difference between physiotherapy and exercise physiology?

Physiotherapy focuses on assessing and treating injuries and pain. Exercise physiology uses exercise as a treatment, particularly for chronic conditions and longer-term rehabilitation. Many people benefit from both at different stages.

How do I know if small group training is right for me?

It suits people who want coaching, structure and community without the cost of one-on-one sessions. If you’re unsure, get in touch and we’ll talk through your goals and any injuries.
